影片讲述了一个关于永恒的故事，始于手风琴老人的独白，及至戴望舒与丁香的爱情，并在其中渗入了一些宏大的元素，新生与死亡，狂欢与孤独，意识形态的桎梏，以及对人性的深掘。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　This is a story. And something more to it.In the memory of Dai Wangshu (Zhang Xuanyi), he was born in a village of enchanting beauty, a place of tranquility and solitude, with people happy and contented in life. One day, it was announced on the PA that a railway was to be built through the village. Things somehow changed in this once serene piece of land. Dai Wangshu was a street corner letter-writer. From his mother (Yan Ling), a committed Buddhist, Dai learned that his father was a rusticated youth. And when the Cultural Revolution hit, his father abandoned the family, left town, and went to the city for revolutionary ideals without ever coming back. Dai could not bear seeing her mother waiting in vain every day for the unlikely return of her husband. So he kept her in the dark, with all the kind and sweet lies. Along with a traveling performance group, there came Lilac (Lin Sensen), a girl who hence changed the life of Dai by giving him the intoxicating taste of love at first sight. To his surprise, the girl Dai held a hidden crush on requited his love. She asked him out. And the two came together. Lilac dreamed to be a big star in the city, while Dai took the Communist ideal of his father as his own. Soon, a talent scout of a production company arrived at the village, and took Lilac away from Dai to the city. The mother saw through this young couple her past self. Same story, different day. She did not wish that her son should experience the kind of regret she felt. So she nudged her son to go looking for his lover in the city. Dai got to the city, and witnessed the horrifying sight of his lover being persecuted, Communist dream that he long held shattered. Added with the repulsion for the ostentation and degeneracy of the city, Dai chose to go back to the world where he used to belong. Upon arriving at the village, Dai learned that his mother had passed on to the next world. In the meantime, the railway was open for traffic. Many villagers took the first train for the city, away from the village.
